Senator Risa Hontiveros expressed her concerns regarding the move of Senate President Chiz Escudero to further delay the scheduled presentation of the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte from June 2 to June 11, 2025.

Let us all hope this is the last delay,” said Hontiveros.

“While I support my colleagues in our shared sense of urgency in passing important legislation in the last days of the 19th Congress, including the landmark Anti-POGO bill, we cannot postpone our constitutional obligations any longer.”

In particular Senator Hontiveros questioned Escudero’s failure to initiate proceedings on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte when the House of Representatives first filed the motion last February.

“Any further delays in commencing the trial against Vice President Duterte would violate the Constitution, which clearly states that the Senate “shall forthwith proceed” with an impeachment trial. Huwag naman sana yang balewalain,” said Hontiveros.

“The Supreme Court has also previously ruled that the Senate is treated as a continuing body when it comes to non-legislative functions, and those include the vital duty to sit as an impeachment court.”

Senator Hontiveros concluded by saying that the Senate most proceed with the Impeachment Trial in behalf of the Filipino people.

“We owe it to the Filipino people to convene as an impeachment court and begin the proceedings at the soonest possible time.
