Lawmakers Rizal Provincial Board Member Bobot Marquez and Antipolo Councilors Edward O’Hara and Nixon Arañas accompanied City Cooperative and Livelihood Office of Antipolo CCLO employees who visited Peace Village subdivision to teach a cottage industry.

The City Cooperative and Livelihood Office of Antipolo (CCLO) taught residents of Peace Village how to manufacture high quality soap from natural, not synthetic, ingredients.

The Peace Village residents were taught soap-making as a cottage industry to augment their income and also for personal use which is important especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Provincial Board Member Marquez emphasized the importance of soap in maintaining hand hygiene to stem the spread of disease especially during this time of COVID-19 pandemic.

Marquez added that soap making as a cottage industry could be a regular source of income especially now with so many jobs and other sources of livelihood lost because of lockdowns to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Well-made soap could be in much demand. Most commercial soaps aren’t even true soap. They’re often manufactured with synthetic ingredients and are more similar to detergents. These may contain artificial ingredients which irritate and dry the skin.

The natural ingredients in handmade soaps are biodegradable. Meanwhile, the synthetic ingredients in commercial soaps, such as phosphorus, drain into rivers and lakes and harm fish and other living things.

The objective of the Livelihood Program is to reduce poverty and inequality by generating employment among poor households and by moving highly vulnerable households into sustainable livelihoods and toward economic stability

Livelihood projects help community members earn additional and often vital, streams of income.

Sustainable livelihoods are therefore needed for economic growth and development of rural populations. There is need for human, social, economic, financial, physical and natural capital for livelihoods to be sustainable.
